How To Build A Runway Stage

Runways are raised platforms that are typically used by models in a fashion show. The runway allows the model to demonstrate clothes or accessories, so that everyone in the targeted audience can see how the item wears. Two of the most important features of a runway are its height and its construction. The runway needs to be elevated high enough that everyone in the audience can see what is on display and it needs to be constructed so that it is safe to use.

The height of the runway should be determined by whether the audience will be standing or sitting to view the stage. The instructions given for this runway is for a seated audience. You are free to adjust the height of your poles as needed, but the construction of this runway is ideal to handle a varying amount of weight. You may build as many of these platforms as necessary to configure the runway that is desired for your event.

Materials:

  • Hacksaw
  • 4 – 30″ scaffolding poles
  • 2 – 36″ scaffolding poles
  • 2 – 72″ scaffolding poles
  • Sheet Plywood
  • Measuring tape
  • Circular Saw
  • Welder
  • Metal Clasps
  • Drill with circular bit for making holes.

Instructions:

    1. Layout two 30″ leg poles perpendicular to each other, then lay a 36″ support bar between them.
    2. Weld these pieces together. You have just created an H-frame.
    3. Do the same with the other two legs and support bar.
    4. Take one of the 72″ support poles and lay it out so that one end of it touches the right leg of one of the H-frames, while the other leg touches the left leg of the other H-frame.
    5. One end of the second 72″ support pole will touch the left leg of the first H-frame, while the other end touches the right leg of the second H-frame. This creates an X in the middle of the frame with the two longest support poles.
    6. Weld the pieces together in the pattern that it is fashioned, leaving at least 4″ at the top of each leg for the fitting of the platform.
    7. Cut the plywood to fit the base and drill holes in each corner to accommodate the diameter of the pole. This will ensure that the plywood doesn’t move while it is being walked on.
    8. Covering the plywood with carpet or tile is optional.
